How You Doin Boomer?
OK! So how you doin? Are you like me, with more than half a century behind you? Let’s see; that’s more than 18,000 sunrises and sunsets. I was scanning a web site the other day (lookin' at what Costa Rica has to offer) and apparently there are at least 77 million of us Boomers coming on stream (and I think that’s just in North America).I was watching one of those travel guide programs the other evening. There is a group of Asian people who have no word for “want” in their language. They did have words for give and take. They took what they needed and gave what they had. They only had possessions they needed. They travelled light!
Like a child, they live in the Now. What if we had no wants? What do we need…..now? Perhaps a review of Maslow's Needs list is in order. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs consists of:
-
Physiological – basic human needs; need for food, water and sustenance
-
Safety – need for security, protection and stability in the personal events of everyday life
-
Social – need for love, affection and belonging in ones' relationship with others
-
Esteem – need for respect, prestige and recognition from others, as well as self esteem and personal sense of competence
-
Self Actualization – need to grow and use abilities to the fullest; highest need
Most of us have fulfilled a significant part of all five categories listed. Imagine if we collectively concentrated more on attaining these needs than on capturing the illusive butterfly of "wants".
We could devote more energy assisting each other realize these basic human needs. And, like the little butterfly girl pictured above, we could imitate the wonder of transition through our participation in Now!
So how you doin?
