Family Matters "Who Loves Ya?"

we are familyOne day while discussing childhood memories with a friend, he mentioned that between 5:30 or 6:00 pm most days he would be outside playing with friends and would hear this distinct whistle. It was his dad's call to get home for supper. His mum would cook the meal; the kids would set the table; dad would come home from work and the family would gather for the evening meal. Married with children - that was a normal North American scenario in those days, 50 years ago.

Grandparents would come for the holidays and you’d visit with cousins in the summer. Family was family!  Yes, there were single parent families for one reason or another and yes, some folks lived alone, but both scenarios seemed few and far between.

I recall attending a seminar where a sociologist was giving a talk on the change in family structure. Apparently, families became increasingly mobile in the mid sixties and much of our extended family support was left in the dust. The typical family was changing. Statistics Canada has it in numbers.

Is Your Family Universal?

Universal FamilyNot long ago a team mate passed away and I attended his funeral service. There in the chapel were members of the immediate family, close friends; those considered to be part of his extended family and of course, a minister to guide the service.  Dan had been a policeman and many former colleagues were there. I attended with a number of his team-mates.  We had played ball together.

My connection with Dan had been mainly “on the baseball field”, though we occasionally crossed paths in the workplace (no, he didn’t arrest me!).  He was a pleasant, easy going guy, well liked,  respected and a "clutch hitter".  He would make any family proud.  I had shared a portion of his life.  I felt a kinship with Dan and was fortunate to be at the service, a joyful celebration of his time here on planet earth.  We had connected.  Positively!

Family Generosity & Fun

Real Cowpie ClockWhen you take the Banana Gang Pledge "you pwomise" (among other things) "to twy to have some fun evwy day".  Here's an example of how easy it can be.  Last week we were invited by a family member to a Nature Trust fund-raiser.  The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a non-governmental charitable organization dedicated to preserving some of B.C.'s endangered ecosystems and areas of spectacular beauty.  It's certainly a worthwhile cause.

We decided to go and support family and the cause.  The event was held in a local pub.  There was good food and great live music.  The joint was packed with friends of the Nature Trust and the feeling was like being around an extended family.  Part of the evening was a silent auction fund-raiser.

As the evening moved along I was told I should go take a look, as there was some interesting stuff on the silent auction tables; so off I went.  There on a table with other more conventional items was this odd looking formation.  It's a Cow Pie Clock!  No kidding….a cow pie clock!   An "original" piece of artwork all solidified and shiny with a clock implanted in the middle with "little droppings" (from others?) for numbers.  And a battery is included!  How could I resist a bid?

Thanks for Giving!

I’m trying to remember the first present I ever received.  I was four or five years old.  I think it was Christmas and Santa brought me a set of Roy Rogers’s twin six guns and holsters.  Very Cool!  Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy, was my first hero.  There was Gabby Hayes, his scruffy sidekick; Trigger, the smartest horse in the world and Dale Evans, Roy’s singing wife.  Happy Trails to You too! I would stand in front of the mirror and squint to look like Roy.  Nobody seemed to think toy guns for kids were a no-no in those days.  Then my cousin showed up for dinner with a really cool red cowboy hat!  Now if I just had that hat too……..

We were a pretty average middle class family when I was growing up, nonetheless, presents were special.  As I recall, I used to get one serious present at Christmas and another on my birthday (only a few days after Christmas, so it was like a double big bang time of year for me).

Boomer Generation: Generosity and 9/11

a ray of hopeDid you watch the recent account of a former U.S. Marine who just happened to be near ground zero in New York that tragic day 6 years ago. His story was central to a truly emotional T.V. show that built his family a wonderful new home. A beautiful example of joy thru generosity!

A bright light shined out of the darkness that day when he risked his own safety to find two policemen alive, trapped in the rubble. Like countless others, many of whom gave their lives for others that day and despite the life threatening conditions, he found the courage to act; not for reward or praise but because he is a human being and it was something he just had to do.

About Us

Greetings Fellow Travellers!

We welcome you from beautiful Parksville, British Columbia, Canada!  We have jumped down the “rabbit hole” & entered the field of all possibilities, embracing the wisdom of uncertainty. TwinkleTone Productions is our vehicle of choice.

Our vision is altruistic and we believe that it’s attainable! We want to share the joy that generosity produces. Through  www.joythrugenerosity.com, we’re offering a variety of interesting resources that reflect the social aspects of generosity, integrity, personal growth, environmentally-friendly living, and of course, humour!

In our ever-changing world, baby boomers are taking on roles and responsibilities they have never experienced before, such as, living in a time of rapidly advancing technology; re-energizing our environment and for some, parenting as grandparents.

Our goal is to provide accessible, quality resources to nurture family and extended family life in a spirit of enhanced generosity and resulting joyfulness. We’re dedicated to offering high quality multi-media resources for educators, employers and families, including children’s products.

TwinkleTone Productions was formed by a couple of “joyful” souls, Cathy Loewen and Anthony White. We’re a social purpose enterprise founded on the belief that each of us can enhance our well-being and the planet by spreading joy thru acts of generosity.

Cathy Loewen (BA; Professional Dip. (Ed.); MA (Ed. Psych.); Dip. Filmmaking):
Down the “rabbit hole” I go! My curious nature has taken me on various twists & turns on this path we call life! I come to you with a background in education, community social services and filmmaking.  I’ve been fortunate to work as an educator, counsellor, program manager and filmmaker, to name but a few of my many incarnations. I love creating projects & watching them take off. I’m finding the launch of our new “creation”www.joythrugenerosity.com very exciting!
I have two grown children who are creating adventures of their own, and when I’m not on the computer, I love to run the beautiful trails on Vancouver Island. And oh yeah, I love beating Tony at bocce ball on a regular basis!
Anthony White (ACOA; PTSD?; ADD and Cheerful Leader of the Banana Gang):   Rabbit hole indeed! Risky business this human being thing! And fun too! I recently “graduated” after some 30 years experience in community social service programming and administration. Prior to that, I enjoyed stints in the recording industry and public recreation.  Throughout the Hi Ho Hi Ho journey (I actually do like to sing while I work), I have continued my involvement in the arts through music and theatre. For the past ten years my “MunkyMan” character has mirrored the TTP philosophy of bringing kindness and humour to the young at heart.
I have 3 grown children and three grandchildren (so far!). I thoroughly enjoy most sports, watching old movies with the "Diva" and continue to explore the horizons of personal & spiritual growth with family and friends. Oh yeah, and I love “letting” Cathy win at Bocce ball!

Is Gratitude Good For You?

A Bridge to GratitudeLike many Canadians, I recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day with family. I find it interesting that we officially designate one day a year to expressing “thanks”. However, I’ve also noticed that there is an “awareness movement” occurring where people are tuning into “an attitude of gratitude”.
In North American society, it’s easy to get caught up in the seduction of consumerism and the constant focus of not having enough, or always wanting more “stuff”. How many times have you thought, “if I just get that new car, or buy a bigger TV, I’ll be happy”?  This can be a “soulless” pursuit, as we never reach a sense of fulfillment….there’s always one more new toy calling us.
According to Judith Timson, a columnist for The Globe and Mail newspaper, “recent research shows that the more genuinely grateful we are for the things we actually have in our lives (as opposed to what we don’t have that we secretly think we’re entitled to), the happier we are and the better our lives feel” (page F7, The Globe and Mail, October 6, 2007).

The Cosmic Wheel of Kindness…Pass It On!

Hey, wanna join the Banana Gang?  Have some fun… take the pledge, wear the t-shirt, and pass on a token of kindnessToken of Kindness”!  Be part of spreading the joy of generosity & kindness!  Kids love passing on the Tokens of Kindness.
The Banana Gang began about 12 years ago when DaMunk (the MunkyMan) began making public appearances.   DaMunk simply asked folks big and small to join the Banana Gang.  There are currently over 1400 members!
This idea began as a unique way for people to reach out and connect with others.  In recognition of random acts of kindness, a “token” is passed on to someone as they perform a kind act.  This sets the “cosmic wheel of kindness” into motion, as tokens are passed on endlessly!  Whenever someone performs an act of kindness hand them a token.
As you pass on a “token of kindness” to someone who has performed a simple kind act, the recipient feels good and so does the donor.  This state of well-being keeps spreading as you feel the benefits within and then with family and community.
Obviously, you do not need a “token of kindness” in order to spread generosity.  Whenever I carry a “token” with me it’s like a wee reminder of how I wish to be in the world.  I’m not talking of huge, heroic deeds, rather, for me, it’s a subtle attitudinal state where I have a choice to smile, say thank you, ask how someone else is doing and really take the time to listen. What a gift!
