Boomer Generation: Generosity and 9/11

a ray of hopeDid you watch the recent account of a former U.S. Marine who just happened to be near ground zero in New York that tragic day 6 years ago. His story was central to a truly emotional T.V. show that built his family a wonderful new home. A beautiful example of joy thru generosity!

A bright light shined out of the darkness that day when he risked his own safety to find two policemen alive, trapped in the rubble. Like countless others, many of whom gave their lives for others that day and despite the life threatening conditions, he found the courage to act; not for reward or praise but because he is a human being and it was something he just had to do.

Is Gratitude Good For You?

A Bridge to GratitudeLike many Canadians, I recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day with family. I find it interesting that we officially designate one day a year to expressing “thanks”. However, I’ve also noticed that there is an “awareness movement” occurring where people are tuning into “an attitude of gratitude”.
In North American society, it’s easy to get caught up in the seduction of consumerism and the constant focus of not having enough, or always wanting more “stuff”. How many times have you thought, “if I just get that new car, or buy a bigger TV, I’ll be happy”?  This can be a “soulless” pursuit, as we never reach a sense of fulfillment….there’s always one more new toy calling us.
According to Judith Timson, a columnist for The Globe and Mail newspaper, “recent research shows that the more genuinely grateful we are for the things we actually have in our lives (as opposed to what we don’t have that we secretly think we’re entitled to), the happier we are and the better our lives feel” (page F7, The Globe and Mail, October 6, 2007).

Have you Heard of Cyber Charities?

Cathypicture.JPGGreetings & welcome to Positively Speaking! Where the world is full of “Infinite Possibilities”!

Today, my story comes out of New York City where any and every thing is possible.

Have you heard of Cyber Charities?  There is a movement a foot, where worthwhile charities are accessing the internet to communicate with communities.

How do you know if they are legitimate?  First, check out their site, see if they have a current charity status designation and an annual audit.  Also, links you can access in Canada or the USA include: the Better Business Bureau; www.give.orgwww.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/charities/menu-e.html.  Word of mouth is also an excellent source, as well as, articles from reputable newspapers and magazines.

While reading the "Globe & Mail" (Toronto, Canada) newspaper, I discovered an article about an innovative cyber charity called Modest Needs.  I went to their website to learn more and as a result, we featured them on our Munky Bytes video.

Transition Generation "One Moment at a Time"

Far from the maddening crowds and competition of Beijing, and oblivious to  the power plays in other far away places; it’s August on Vancouver Island.  The morning sunrise over Craig Bay is truly a blessing to behold.  It’s going to be another hot one today!  Freshly brewed coffee in hand, I take it all in.

Something's Happening Here Boomers!

Springtime Flowers“Hard as it may be to believe in these days of infectious greed and sabers unsheathed , scientists have discovered that the small, brave act of cooperating with another person, of choosing trust over cynicism, generosity over selfishness, makes the brain light up with quiet joy”…………. Nice eh!

Reading Rambam’s Ladder (A Meditation on Generosity and Why It Is Necessary to Give) by Julie Salamon introduced me to this little gem.  The quote was borrowed from an article written by Natalie Angier and fit nicely into Ms. Salamon’s meditation.  Somethings happening here!

BOOMERS IN SOUTH EAST ASIA

 Phnom Penh kids

Good friends just returned from a trip to Thailand and Cambodia.  When asked about their adventure one thread was continual.  They were consistently moved by the smiles on the faces of the people they came in contact with - moments of pure joy.

They told us of the blessing given to them by a blind street merchant after a small sale; the stranger freely giving directions; little ragamuffin children waving “Hello” from their small one room huts on stilts; the true thanks for a tip from a driver, a waiter or guest house clerk and how they bowed gently with their hands in child like prayer.)  Honest gratitude was commonplace.

NOTICE BOARD

                           UPDATE MARCH 2008

COMING SOON!

"GENEROSITY WORKPLACE WELLNESS SEMINARS":    We are currently developing 1 .5 hour /half day / full day seminars to enhance workplace generosity. Our concept embraces the generosity within the individual employment environment and in the greater community, locally and globally.

INTERNATIONAL JOY!

MULTICULTURAL GENEROSITY: We recently visited Southeast Asia (Thailand and Cambodia) to research a documentary on the Generosity of Nations. This research will lead us into to a series of films and slide shows demonstrating joy through generosity around the world. Our plan is to provide schools, colleges and the general public with models of the simple joy of giving. We are looking for individual and corporate sponsors interested in helping finance the production(s). Visit our Advertising / Sponsors Category Page

INTERACTION WITH YOU:

We invite articles and comments from site visitors to provide their accounts of the joy of giving & receiving & topics related to our purpose.  Additionally, we'd like to establish important links to those individuals and organizations with like-minded goals.

We’ll keep you “posted” and as always, welcome your support and feedback.  As stated in ABOUT US we believe the joy and spiritual growth stemming from generosity can change the world and the more we embrace it, the more we are enhancing the quality of life for our planet and its entire population.

And as DaMunk says, “Bula Bula”
